Affordability & Housing Stability
Every Montgomery County resident deserves a stable, affordable place to call home.
Too many Montgomery County families are being priced out of the communities they helped build. Rising housing costs, grocery prices, and everyday expenses are forcing residents to make difficult choices about whether they can afford to stay.
Montgomery County must take practical steps to ensure families, seniors, and young people can live, work, and build their futures here.
The Housing Crisis Is Real — and Local
Too often, housing discussions focus only on market-rate "supply" — building more units at whatever price the market bears. But building luxury apartments doesn't help the family spending 50% of their income on rent, or the essential worker commuting two hours each way because they can't afford to live near their job.
Montgomery County needs leadership that understands the difference between housing supply and affordable housing supply — and fights for the latter.
Expand Truly Affordable Housing
Fatmata will push to increase the county's Moderately Priced Dwelling Unit (MPDU) requirements and fight to strengthen inclusionary zoning policies that ensure new developments include genuinely affordable units — not just "affordable by comparison."
She will partner with nonprofit and mission-driven developers who prioritize community benefit over profit margins, and support community land trusts that permanently remove homes from speculative markets so they remain affordable for generations.
Address Food Deserts and the Cost of Everyday Life
Affordability isn't only about rent and mortgages. In too many parts of Montgomery County, residents must travel miles to find fresh groceries, pay premium prices at convenience stores, or go without. Fatmata will work to attract and support grocery stores, farmers markets, and community co-ops in underserved areas — and to connect residents with programs that reduce the cost of food and essential goods.
Why This Matters for Montgomery County
When teachers, nurses, firefighters, and sanitation workers can't afford to live in the county they serve, everyone suffers. Community institutions weaken. Commute times grow. Diversity declines. The vibrant, inclusive Montgomery County we believe in — where people of all backgrounds can build a life — requires bold action on affordability. Fatmata is ready to deliver it.
Housing is not a luxury. It is a foundation. With your support, Fatmata will fight every day to make sure Montgomery County remains a place where everyone can afford to live, work, and thrive.
