Defending Democracy
Rights are being rolled back — Montgomery County must be a place where everyone is protected.
Our nation is at a crisis point — across the country, we are seeing rights roll back and an effort from some in Washington to undermine the foundations of our democracy. As a Councilmember, Fatmata will fight to ensure every Montgomery County resident feels protected by their local government.
Protecting Civil Liberties and Immigrant Communities
Montgomery County is home to one of the most diverse immigrant communities in the nation — our neighbors, coworkers, students, and small business owners who contribute enormously to our economy and our culture. Fatmata will ensure that all county and local law enforcement do not work with federal law enforcement to violate civil liberties. This includes not participating in ICE raids, policing protestors, or investigating residents for their political views.
Fighting for Residents Affected by DOGE and Government Shutdowns
The so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and federal budget standoffs are not abstract political fights — they have real consequences for Montgomery County residents. Federal workers live here in large numbers. Federal programs fund our schools, healthcare, housing assistance, and more.
These harms have not fallen equally. Black women are disproportionately represented in the federal workforce — and have borne a disproportionate share of recent layoffs and cuts. The impact has not been equal — and Fatmata will not pretend otherwise.
Fatmata will work with community leaders to make sure residents are aware of county resources and don't lose their homes or struggle to make ends meet due to undemocratic measures from the Trump Administration.
Hate Has No Place in Our County
Fatmata wants Montgomery County to remain a diverse and inclusive community free from all forms of racism, hate, discrimination, and bigotry. She believes that together, we can build a brighter future for Montgomery County — one where everyone has a fair shot at success, security, and a place to call home.
That commitment includes full language and communication access. Residents who communicate in languages other than English — or in American Sign Language (ASL) — must be able to access county government, public services, and civic participation on equal terms. Fatmata will advocate for robust interpretation services, including ASL, across county agencies and public meetings.
Transparency and Accountability in Government
Democracy doesn't stop at the federal level. Fatmata believes that county government must also be held to the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and community participation. She will champion open government practices, meaningful community engagement in county decisions, and accountability for elected and appointed officials who abuse the public trust.
Why This Matters for Montgomery County
When democracy erodes — at any level — it is the most vulnerable who suffer first. Immigrants live in fear. Federal workers lose jobs. Services disappear. Discrimination goes unchecked. Montgomery County can and must do better. Local government is often the last line of defense, and Fatmata will treat it that way.
Democracy is not a spectator sport — it requires leaders willing to stand up, speak out, and take action. Fatmata will be that leader for Montgomery County. Join her.
