Defending Democracy

Rights are being rolled back — Montgomery County must be a place where everyone is protected.

Montgomery County residents should feel safe, protected, and confident that their rights will be respected. At a time when civil liberties are being challenged across the country, local government must play a role in ensuring that every resident—regardless of background—can live, work, and participate in civic life without fear.

Protecting Our Immigrant Communities

Montgomery County is home to one of the most diverse immigrant communities in the nation. These are our neighbors, coworkers, students, and small business owners — people who contribute enormously to our economy and our culture. They deserve to feel safe.

Fatmata will ensure that local law enforcement does not participate in ICE raids or act as immigration enforcement agents. Montgomery County should not use public resources to enforce federal immigration policy that tears apart families and terrorizes communities.

Fighting Federal Overreach: DOGE and Government Shutdowns

The so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and federal budget standoffs are not abstract political fights — they have real consequences for Montgomery County residents. Federal workers live here in large numbers. Federal programs fund our schools, healthcare, housing assistance, and more.

These harms have not fallen equally. Black women are disproportionately represented in the federal workforce — and have borne a disproportionate share of recent layoffs and cuts. The impact has not been equal — and Fatmata will not pretend otherwise.

Fatmata will fight for every resident affected by federal job cuts, government shutdowns, and the dismantling of safety net programs. She will work with county leaders and community partners to connect impacted residents to housing support, food assistance, and workforce resources — and push back loudly against Washington policies that harm Montgomery County families.

Keeping Montgomery County Free from Hate and Discrimination

Every person in Montgomery County — regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability — deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Fatmata will oppose any attempt to use county government as a tool of discrimination, and will support robust enforcement of our civil rights protections.

She will work with community organizations to combat hate crimes, support victims of discrimination, and build a county government that reflects and serves all of its residents.

Transparency and Accountability in Government

Democracy doesn't stop at the federal level. Fatmata believes that county government must also be held to the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and community participation. She will champion open government practices, meaningful community engagement in county decisions, and accountability for elected and appointed officials who abuse the public trust.

Why This Matters for Montgomery County

When democracy erodes — at any level — it is the most vulnerable who suffer first. Immigrants live in fear. Federal workers lose jobs. Services disappear. Discrimination goes unchecked. Montgomery County can and must do better. Local government is often the last line of defense, and Fatmata will treat it that way.

Democracy is not a spectator sport — it requires leaders willing to stand up, speak out, and take action. Fatmata will be that leader for Montgomery County. Join her.
