Safer Communities
Real safety comes from investment in people and in our communities.
Every Montgomery County resident deserves to feel safe — in their home, on their street, and in their community. Real safety means investing in people before a crisis — not just responding after one. It comes from economic opportunity, mental health support, strong youth programs, and the kind of deep community trust that only grows when government is accountable and responsive. Fatmata will pursue a balanced, evidence-based approach to public safety that addresses root causes and builds lasting security.
Invest in Prevention, Youth Programs, and Mentorship
The most effective crime prevention strategy is creating opportunity before problems start. When young people have access to after-school programs, mentorship, summer jobs, and safe spaces, they are less likely to end up in the criminal justice system — and more likely to become the next generation of community leaders.
Fatmata will push for robust investment in youth programming, especially in communities that have been historically underserved. She will fight to protect these programs from budget cuts and expand them where the need is greatest.
Expand Mental Health and Crisis Response Services
Too often, people in mental health crisis encounter police officers who lack the training or resources to help them. This can lead to tragic outcomes for people who needed medical intervention, not law enforcement.
Fatmata will work to expand co-responder programs and mobile crisis teams that pair mental health professionals with law enforcement, and to invest in community-based crisis stabilization centers where people can get help without going through the criminal justice system.
Promote Transparency and Accountability in Public Safety
Trust between communities and law enforcement has to be earned — and it can only be earned through transparency, accountability, and meaningful community engagement. Fatmata will push for strong oversight mechanisms for the county's public safety agencies, clear data on use of force and other critical metrics, and genuine community input in public safety policy decisions.
She will ensure that every resident — regardless of race, income, or immigration status — is treated with dignity by the people whose job is to protect them.
Improve Traffic and Pedestrian Safety
Safety on our roads is a public safety issue. Montgomery County has seen too many preventable traffic fatalities — especially involving pedestrians and cyclists. Fatmata will advocate for evidence-based traffic calming measures, safer crosswalks and intersections, enforcement of traffic laws, and a Vision Zero approach that treats every traffic death as preventable.
Support a Community-Connected Public Safety Workforce
Strong communities are built on trust, and trust grows when those who serve our communities are connected to them. Fatmata believes Montgomery County should be a place where public safety professionals — including police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and dispatch personnel — can afford to live and put down roots.
She will support policies that address affordability for public safety workers, helping strengthen community relationships, improve responsiveness, and build the deeper trust that makes everyone safer.
Support Mental Health for Public Safety Professionals
Public safety roles are high-pressure and emotionally demanding — including for dispatchers, who are often the first voice a resident hears in a crisis. Fatmata will champion access to mental health resources and wellness programs for public safety professionals to reduce burnout, support better decision-making, and ensure safer outcomes for the entire community.
Why This Matters for Montgomery County
Safe communities don't happen by accident. They are built through sustained investment — in people, in programs, in relationships, and in accountability. When we invest in prevention and mental health and community trust alongside law enforcement, we create communities where everyone can live without fear.
Fatmata believes every resident of Montgomery County deserves the safety and security to build a good life. She will fight for both the resources and the accountability that make real safety possible.
